Transforming a Steep Slope into Functional Outdoor Living Space (West Chester)

AFTER: The hillside is transformed with an outdoor living destination in the form of a cozy patio and fire pit surrounded by native landscaping.

The Challenge

This West Chester new build presented a challenge that’s familiar to homeowners across the Cincinnati region: a steep backyard slope that was not truly usable.

BEFORE: A bare hillside with a steep slope made this landscape effectively unusable while requiring time-consuming maintenance.

The conventional approach would require weekly mowing and ongoing maintenance on a difficult grade. And even with all this effort, the space wouldn’t offer any meaningful functionality or opportunities for outdoor living.

So, the homeowners reached out to Our Land Organics with the goal of transforming the hillside to be purposeful, low-maintenance, and integrated with the surrounding landscape.

The Transformation

We set out to create an enticing destination at the base of the slope, drawing family and friends into the yard and inviting their participation with the landscape.

A crushed stone patio with a circular fire pit anchors the space, offering a place to gather. The patio was designed intentionally to create the feeling of being “tucked into” the landscape, rather than exposed within it.

AFTER: The hillside is transformed with an outdoor living destination in the form of a cozy patio and fire pit surrounded by native landscaping.

A major component of the design was navigating the elevation change in a way that felt intuitive and visually cohesive. Stone steps and retaining elements guide movement down the slope, breaking up the grade and improving accessibility while creating a strong sense of arrival at the patio below.

A hillside installation of native woody plants and a perennial cover mix of clover and yarrow adds year-round interest and ecological value to the landscape.

Landscaping with native plants gives the entire landscape a more cohesive feel while providing additional benefits, such as summer shade. We installed native plantings, including red osier dogwood and fragrant sumac, to soften the transition into the wooded edge. Meanwhile, arborvitae provide structure and privacy.

In addition to being functional, these plantings offer ecological value. They provide food and habitat for birds and other pollinators.

Rather than maintaining the hillside as traditional turf, we seeded the slope with a perennial mix of clover and yarrow.

This approach significantly reduces maintenance, requiring only annual mowing. It also improves soil health and provides seasonal interest thanks to the use of blooming plants.

Closer to the home, we identified an underutilized side yard as an opportunity. This space was reimagined as an enclosed raised bed garden, adding both productive function and everyday usability to the landscape.

The Takeaway

What began as a challenging and unusable slope is now a layered, multi-functional environment.

The new landscape balances structure, ecology, and long-term ease of care while providing pleasant opportunities for outdoor living.
