Miscanthus sinensis, or Chinese Silvergrass, is a common ornamental grass in the United States. It's also an invasive species that causes ecological damage across the Cincinnati region. This post details the harms caused by Miscanthus and offers native plant alternatives that yield similar benefits in the landscape while supporting ecological wellbeing.

Can a neglected landscape be salvaged? When Our Land Organics was called onto the scene, the backyard of this historic Clifton Gaslight residence had been abandoned. The client thought there was potential buried underneath all the overgrowth, and they hoped to gain more access to the underutilized yard. They asked Our Land Organics to reimagine the backyard as a place of respite that nourishes both wildlife and humans—a chance to escape the urban hubbub, to watch pollinators dance and berries ripen. Here’s how we did it.

Well-chosen groundcovers can dramatically reduce the number of weeds in a landscape by functioning as a living mulch, and many native groundcovers provide a range of aesthetic and ecological benefits. But invasive groundcovers often cause more harm than good. Case in point: English ivy. When the Our Land Organics team met with a client from Cincinnati’s Mt. Lookout neighborhood, they were eager to get more use out of their backyard. They hoped to create a private destination spot that enhanced the underutilized yard’s aesthetic appeal, deepened their closeness with the natural world, and improved their views from inside the house. With thoughtful landscape design, we transformed a weedy hillside into a beautiful, welcoming outdoor living space for family and friends.
